Washington Times: Teixeira Announcement Expected Today

The Washington Times is reporting that an announcement is expected today on where Mark Teixeira will play starting next season.

According to the major league baseball source, there are strong indications it is the Boston Red Sox who will emerge the victors.

A major league baseball source has told The Washington Times' Thom Loverro that there will be an announcement today regarding the future of free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira.

While the source declined to discuss specifics, there are strong indications that the Red Sox will announce that they have landed the highly-coveted slugger, who has been courted this off-season by several major league clubs, including the Angels, Orioles and Nationals.

Report: Red Sox Agree In Principle On Deal With Mark Teixeira

I have no credibility on the source, but hey it's something to toss out there.

Sons Of Bill Simmons is reporting that the Boston Red Sox and Mark Teixeira have agreed in principle to a contract for a reported eight years.

Sources have confirmed to Sons of Simmons, that the Boston Red Sox have agreed in principle to an eight-year deal with first basemen Mark Teixeira. Details are still sketchy at the moment, but it looks to be for around $170 Million dollars, not the $195 Million that agent Scott Boras was asking for.

I would imagine we'd know either way by the end of today since Teixeira has said he wants a new team by Christmas and it would be unlikely to wait until Christmas Eve to make the decision.

Gammons: Red Sox & Teixeira Not Far Apart

Here's the latest from Peter Gammons:

Most free agents probably read Red Sox owner John Henry's cryptic e-mail in regards to the Teixeira negotiations, which probably was a rewrite of something he wrote to Frank McCourt when he was negotiating to buy McCourt's house outside Boston, which, roughly translated, might have read, "If you can get $30 million for the house, you'd be wise to take it." McCourt didn't, and Henry got the house for considerably less.

One source close to Teixeira said Friday that the two sides are not that far apart, and the conciliatory and civilized nature of those words made it obvious that Teixeira likes Mr. Henry's neighborhood, he just wants the kitchen and heating system redone as part of the deal. Teixeira is a very bright man who might be willing to take Washington's money (if it has been offered) or go back to Anaheim or welcome the Yankees into negotiations; he knows what he thinks he is worth, and he knows Scott Boras' math says the Red Sox could sign him, Jason Varitek and Lowe and be right around last season's payroll.

Henry: "it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor"

John Henry has sent out a email in which he says the Red Sox apparently won't be a factor in the chase to sign Mark Teixeira.

"We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor."

If what Henry said is true, this is a shocking development in the Teixeira sweepstakes, which most around baseball felt Boston was ahead in.

However, unless the Yankees came swooping in and offered some ridiculous contract, which isn't entirely impossible, one would still have to think the Red Sox have a chance to sign Teixeira given his preference to be on the east coast and play for a contender.

Teixeira could accept a lower offer to play for Boston instead of say signing with Washington for what is thought to be a higher offer, but a team that is no where near being ready to compete.

Also unknown is wether Henry and Theo Epstein have left Texas or if they are still there and will possibly sit back down with Scott Boras and Teixeira again later this evening or perhaps tomorrow.

While Henry's words make it seem like Boston is out of it, I wouldn't count them out until Teixeira's putting his signature on a contract elsewhere.

Report: Deal With Teixeira Could Be Finalized Tonight

Theo Epstein and John Henry are reportedly meeting with Scott Boras tonight in hopes of finalizing a eight year deal for $184 million.

Merry Christmas Sox Fans?

The OC Register is reporting the Boston Red Sox have offered Mark Teixeira a eight year deal worth $200 million.

The report would blow the offers from the other teams completely out of the water and if true means we can expect a Teixeira press conference at Fenway by the end of the week.

Dan Patrick reported on his show on AM 570 that the Boston Red Sox have made first baseman Mark Teixeira an eight-year, $200 million offer.

If so, that blows the reported eight-year, $160 million offers by the Angels and the Washington Nationals out of the water.

Patrick said Monday morning: “If it’s true they’re offering $200 million to a career .290 hitter, it’ll be interesting to see what the Angels do.”

UPDATE 1:06AM: Tim Dierkes at MLB Trade Rumors has a bit saying a reader of his blog told him he heard the Dan Patrick comments and that Patrick was giving a hypothetical situation.

A reader who heard the show says Patrick was only speaking in the hypothetical with the $200MM figure, so Bloom's post was apparently inaccurate. This is why I typically avoid radio reports unless I hear them myself...sorry about that. In listening to the Reggie Miller interview on Patrick's site he was definitely only giving an opinion during that portion.

However later Monday Earl Bloom at The OC Register posted a followup where he clarified his original post and even took a shot at Dierkes.

This is a blog. There are comments made on the internet, the radio, television. We mention them, link to them, perhaps comment on them ourselves. It’s a discussion, people. First of all, if it was a news story, it would have cited sources. Mr. Patrick didn’t. He mentioned a report of $200 million, and then he said — which was quoted in the post — “if it’s true they’re offering $200 million to a .290 hitter, it’ll be interesting to see what the Angels do.” He then speculated about Manny Ramirez. That’s it, the extent of it. A comment on a comment on an unspecified report. Amazingly, even other bloggers didn’t get it.

UPDATE 9:51AM: Seems there may have been some accuracy to what Dan Patrick said yesterday. Michael Silverman is reporting Boston has made an offer to Teixeira for eight years and Teixeira seeking a deal closer to A-Rods per season salary then not.

Silverman says Boston views Teixiera in the same “must-have” light as they did Matsuzaka.

Blogs And Such

Here's a quick rundown of happenings around the world of Red Sox blogs.

» Ian at Sox & Dawgs gives us a brief rundown of known offers for Mark Teixeira, like me, Ian hopes he is sporting some of those new uniforms and hats unveiled Thursday by the Red Sox.

» Hideki Okajima is running a marathon tomorrow, the Red Sox wish they had known so they could have discouraged him from doing so.

» Within an hour last night there was a report of an offer from Boston to Kenshin Kawakami and then a denial by an unnamed baseball source. The source called the reported $21 million offer over three years to be not accurate, the brief post by Amalie Benjamin ended with the line "The Sox apparently have not made an offer to Kawakami.", whether that last part was also from the source or an opinion from Benjamin could be vital, as a denial of the reported offer without the last line could suggest an offer was made, but not for the amount reported. I am waiting for a response to an inquiry to Benjamin regarding that.

» Cyn talks about Major League Baseball refusing to increase the amount of money given to minor leaguers each day for meals. The amount currently sits at $20 and an increase of $5 was approved by the General Managers last month in California, MLB officials failed to even present the proposal to owners.

» Cyn also has a Did you know post, I'm guessing she'd rather be in the boat then under it.

» Red is getting his bunker ready.

» Headwarmer is apparently sick of the hype and has decided to watch Oprah.

» Paul gets all number nerdy again over at YFSF as he takes a look at just who Mark Teixeira is.

Red Sox Target Another Japanese Pitcher

Perhaps the Boston Red Sox should have incorporated some Japanese text into their new logo yesterday.

Already with three Japanese pitchers on their 40-man roster, the Boston Red Sox have now reportedly made the largest offer to Kenshin Kawakami and his accepting the offer is probably now just a formality as he has expressed a lot of interest in signing with Boston.

According to Nikkan Sports, the Red Sox have offered Kawakami $21 million over three seasons to join the back end of the Red Sox rotation.

Many around baseball have suggested recently that Boston should focus on signing starting pitching as opposed to going after Mark Teixeira, but that never made sense for a team with three aces already to spend heavily on the high priced, high risk starters on the market.

With this move Theo Epstein shows why he is one of the best General Managers in baseball.

UPDATE: A baseball source is saying the Nikkan Sports report is not accurate and the Sox have not made an offer. Keep in mind though that sources were saying the Sox hadn't made an offer to Jason Varitek while according to the Providence Journal, Theo Epstein confirmed Varitek was among the players they have made offers to.

Red Sox Unveil Uniform Changes

Not bad, I like returning to the blue text on road jersey, and I like that it's in the Red Sox font now.

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

No big news regarding the Boston Red Sox yet from Las Vegas, but there's plenty of news in general.

» Thursday the Red Sox will unveil a new logo and uniform design. The changes according to the Red Sox will be for select uniforms which would suggest the new designs would only be used occasionally. New Era reportedly briefly posted a new Red Sox hat on its website but was taken down a short time later, that hat design is pictured to the right.

A new design of the teams alternate uniform is likely what will be unveiled tomorrow as changing its home uniform or everyday hat design would likely be cause for a huge outcry from Red Sox Nation. Currently the Red Sox use a Red jersey with blue lettering as its alternate jersey.

» The Red Sox are currently viewed as the most likely destination for Mark Teixeira. No figure has been released as part of what Boston may have or may offer Teixeira as it's initial offer. Washington is reportedly willing to give $200 million over 10 years while Baltimore is willing to go nine years at about $20 million per season.

Teixeira reportedly wants to play on the east coast which if true takes the Angels out of the running.

» Boston appears to be on a short list of teams John Smoltz would be willing to play for. He would come at a much cheaper price than Derek Lowe or AJ Burnett and likely can be had for a shorter deal which would be attractive to Boston as long term they have plenty of options for the rotation with Clay Buchholz, Justin Masterson, Junichi Tazawa and Michael Bowden.

» The Red Sox are reluctant to sign Rocco Baldelli because of concerns he wouldn't be available to play long stretches which might be a must with JD Drew on the roster.

» Kenshin Kawakami is interested in joining the Red Sox, he is a left handed starter who's making the jump from Japan to Major League Baseball.

Red Sox Have Interest In Andy Pettitte

From Boston.com

Though there is no indication that any deal is imminent or that the Sox have done anything more than kick the tires, the Sox have expressed some interest in the pitcher, according to a source. The Sox made Pettitte an offer several years ago when Pettitte signed with the Houston Astros after leaving the New York Yankees, though part of Pettitte's desire to pitch for Houston at that time involved Roger Clemens' presence with the Astros.

This year, Pettitte earned $16 million while going 14-14 with a 4.54 ERA for the Yankees. The 36-year-old seems likely to return to New Yorj this offseason, but the Red Sox could be a fit later in the offseason if certain elemnts fall into place.

Winter Meetings

Next weeks winter meetings could lead to several signings across baseball including Boston. I plan to update the blog several times daily during the meetings next week.

Wednesday, December 03, 2008

Sox Lock Up Pedroia

It's a six year deal for about $40.5 million and a club option for 2015.

UPDATE: Just a quick opinion on this deal. I think Pedroia was the most vital young player the Red Sox have to get locked up long term. Corner infielders are easy to comeby on the free agent market as are starting pitchers. MVP calliber second basemen don't come around everyday.

I expect Jonathan Papelbon and Kevin Youkilis have deals coming this winter, possibly Jon Lester too, but Lester may get left waiting for one more offseason.

Sox Land Tazawa

Junichi Tazawa has decided to accept the Boston Red Sox offer and will officially sign in early December when he is officially allowed to.

Reports say the offer from Boston is for three years at $1 million per and that he will begin at AA Portland.

He will remain a starter and will be provided with a personal translator. The deal is a major league deal.

The signing doesn't come as much of a surprise as most expected he would sign with Boston.

UPDATE: Signed, sealed and delivered.

What If Boston Lands Teixeira

A lot of talk recently within the Boston sports world is about what happens if Boston signs Mark Teixeira to a contract this winter.

As I write this I had just finished reading a post at Fire Brand of the American League, it is a decent look at the recent Coco trade and what it could lead to over the rest of the winter.

The commenter's on the post also get into the discussion and one name mentioned in the comments led me to write this post... Lars Anderson.

The signing of Mark Teixeira does not necessarily mean the end of the road to Boston for Anderson.

Anderson just turned 21 at the end of September and with David Ortiz turning 33 next week there certainly is a possibility that in the near future Boston will have a DH spot open in its lineup. Ortiz is signed through 2010 with a team option for 2011.

A safe bet would be that in 2009 Anderson starts the season in Portland and by seasons end will be in Pawtucket and we could assume 2010 will be in AAA as well but certainly with the likelihood that at some point in 2010 Anderson gets a call to Boston.

Assuming Ortiz has regained his bat and is still productive the team would pick up his 2011 option and Anderson would also be part of the 2011 team in some capacity. Following 2011 the Sox will have as good an idea on where Anderson is as a hitter as they ever will and a decision can be made whether its time for him to be an everyday player in Boston.

In 2012 when he would then take over as an everyday player he would still just be 24 years old.

Boston would now have two decent first basemen (by then Kevin Youkilis would have already taken over at third base) who can split time between first and DH.

This could take place a year sooner if Boston felt Anderson were ready.

There of course is a issue that will be on the front burner much sooner with a Teixeira signing, what to do in 2009 with David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis, Mike Lowell and Teixeria all under contract with three positions available between them.

There's no reason you cant be creative here. Ortiz is a year older and more rest wouldn't be a bad thing for him, same with Lowell. Giving Youkilis rest could also be beneficial in the second half when he has usually fallen off in the past.

The Red Sox could move the lineup around where each gets regular rest and is available late in games to pinch hit. Would you rather see Ortiz pinch hit in the 9th or someone like Alex Cora?

Youkilis of course can also play the role of an emergency OF if it was ever necessary.

Some may remember the constant talk of mixing in Dustin Pedroia, Julio Lugo and Alex Cora early in 2007 when Cora was off to such a hot start, the same idea can be used here.

One day you play Ortiz and Lowell, the next Ortiz and Youk and then Youk and Lowell. They each play two in a row and then have a day off. Occasionally you give Teixeira a day off and have the other three all in the lineup.

The situation would be easier to resolve if Boston were able to trade Mike Lowell if they do Sign Teixeira, but at no point would I want Boston trading Youkilis or Ortiz, I'd rather have a 3 man rotation.

Why Is Boston Making A Run At Burnett?

Just days ago it appeared Boston wouldn't make a big splash in the expensive market for free agent starting pitchers, that apparently has changed.

Several sources have said the Red Sox have gone heavy into the chase for AJ Burnett.

What could have caused this? It probably all points towards the rumors of Tim Wakefield leaning towards retirement being true.

If Wakefield does retire there would be a big hole in the Red Sox rotation that Boston would need to fill either in free agency or from within the organization.

With Boston likely already going with one young pitcher from the system in the rotation they probably feel the safer route for the other slot would be a proven veteran, and that's where Burnett enters the picture.

Boston had and probably still does have interest in having Derek Lowe return to Boston, but probably not at the price he is reportedly seeking, Burnett while likely commanding similar dollars is younger the Lowe so in a way a safer bet.

Boston is also said to be in the running for Kenshin Kawakami, a Japanese free agent pitcher who could slot into the back of the rotation, by signing Kawakami and a veteran like Burnett, Boston could keep Justin Masterson in the bullpen helping strengthening it for the 2009 season or using him in a deal to land a catcher from Texas.

Should Wakefield retire, Boston could also move past having a special catcher on the roster for him, they could then have a younger guy like Jarrod Saltamacchia playing more often and giving Varitek more rest.

If I had to make a guess right now, I would lean towards Varitek having already thrown his last pitch. Being after Burnett points that way.

Update 11:34PM: Here's a look at how the pitching staff would look if Boston signed Burnett and Kawakami.

Rotation
Josh Beckett
Jon Lester
Daisuke Matsuzaka
AJ Burnett
Kenshin Kawakami

Burnett could slot in at #2 and move Lester down to #4.

Bullpen

Jonathan Papelbon
Justin Masterson
Manny Delcarmen
Ramon Ramirez
Hideki Okajima

Boston would have two bullpen slots still to fill. It's unlikely, but possible Daniel Bard could win a spot in spring training, but its more likely he would be someone added mid season.

Coco Traded

The Red Sox have made their first move of the offseason. The Sox send Coco Crisp to Kansas City for reliever Ramon Ramirez.

Pedroia Wins MVP

At this time two years ago, many in Boston doubted the abilities of Dustin Pedroia, the one man who's opinion mattered stuck by him then and again in the early parts of the 2007 when it appeared Pedroia was in over his head.

By the end of that season Pedroia was the American League Rookie of the Year and all doubt was gone from the minds of Sox fans from coast-to-coast.

If somewhere there was a doubter remaining, there no longer is.

Today Dustin Pedroia joined an elite class of Red Sox player to have won an American League Most Valuable Player award when he won a rather easy battle against Justin Morneau, Kevin Youkilis and Joe Mauer.

Pedroia was named first on 16 of the 28 ballots, and amazingly one voter felt Pedroia wasn't among the 10 most valuable players of 2008.

Pedroia becomes only the third player to win ROY and MVP in back-to-back seasons, though others have won both in the same season.

The second baseman in just his second full season has already collected a great deal of awards.

  • 2007 American League Rookie of the Year

  • 2007 World Series Champion

  • 2008 American League MVP

  • 2008 American League Silver Slugger Award

  • 2008 American League Gold Glove

  • 2008 American League All-Star Starter

Red Sox Will Be Busy This Month

Theo Epstein and the Boston Red Sox should be quite busy this month as they have several targets on their radar.

Kevin Davidoff of Newsday reports that the Red Sox will aggressively pursue Mark Teixeira during the offseason.

Boston also seems set to make a run at a trade with Texas for catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Boston would likely have to give up two of their top pitching prospects in a deal for Salty.

Boston also has some Japanese pitchers to look at. The consensus is that Junichi Tazawa will end up with Boston, he was passed over by every team in Japan and is free to sign with anyone he wants.

Theres also Japanese veteran Kenshin Kawakami who is a free agent and has expressed a desire to play for Boston, signing him could add depth to the rotation, especially if Boston has to trade Justin Masterson and Clay Buchholz to get Salty.

Kawakami could slide into the 5th spot in the rotation with Michael Bowden sitting at AAA as the top insurance policy incase of injury in the rotation.

If Boston did trade Masterson in a deal for Salty that would give Daniel Bard an opportunity to win a bullpen spot in spring training.

The question would be what to do with Tazawa if he signed. At just 22-years-old there would be no hurry to get him to Boston and he would likely start out at AA Portland, though if Boston was concerned about the early season weather, he could start out at the new A-Advanced team down in Salem, Virginia before moving to Portland in May.

Hanky Stein Crying Over Yankees Missing Playoffs

This should come to no surprise to anyone. Hank Steinbrenner is whining over Major League Baseball's playoff format the day after the Boston Red Sox officially eliminated the New York Yankees from the playoff race.

"The biggest problem is the divisional setup in major league baseball. I didn't like it in the 1970s, and I hate it now," Steinbrenner wrote. "Baseball went to a multidivision setup to create more races, rivalries and excitement. But it isn't fair. You see it this season, with plenty of people in the media pointing out that Joe Torre and the Dodgers are going to the playoffs while we're not.

I'm not sure how the Dodgers making the playoffs would keep the Yankees out in any format since their in a different league.

Even if Major League Baseball still listed teams as a league instead of divisions, the Yankees would only have the fourth best record among American League teams and thats only by a half game over the Chicago White Sox.

"I'm happy for Joe, but you have to compare the divisions and the competition," Steinbrenner wrote. "What if the Yankees finish the season with more wins than the Dodgers but the Dodgers make the playoffs? Does that make the Dodgers a better team? No."

Again he's using an argument that wouldn't matter in any format.

Steinbrenner also questioned the legitimacy of the Cardinals' 2006 title, noting that their 83 regular-season victories were two less than the Phillies' total, but because of the system, St. Louis reached the playoffs as NL Central champs while Philadelphia lost the wild card race to the Dodgers, who had 88 wins.

"People will say the Cardinals were the best team because they won the World Series," Steinbrenner wrote. "Well, no, they weren't. They just got hot at the right time. They didn't even belong in the playoffs. And neither does a team from the N.L. West this season."

Someone should ask Hanky if he should be taking shots at World Championship teams since the accomplishments of at least two of the Yankees recent Championships are tainted by steroids.

Of course, the same could be said for the 2000 Yankees, who won the World Series that fall after registering just 87 wins to capture the AL East title. Four other teams in the AL had more victories that season, including a 90-win Indians team that missed the playoffs.

Ahhh and one is tainted by Hanky's own logic.

Sox Will Finally Honor Pesky

This weekend the Boston Red Sox will break franchise protocol and honor Red Sox legend Johnny Pesky.

Pesky has been a part of the Red Sox franchise in several roles for 57 of the past 69 years, he will finally receive and honor he so truly deserves.
The Red Sox have requirements that must be met for a player to have his number retired. They include finishing your career with Boston, playing for Boston for at least ten seasons and being a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Pesky meets the requirements except for the final one, this move by Boston could also open the door in the near future for the retirement of Jim Rice's number should the Hall of Fame voters continue to keep him out of Cooperstown.

Pesky today is one of the most beloved of all the Red Sox family. On opening day 2005 he received the loudest ovation from the Fenway faithful and one would assume Fenway will be rocking this weekend when his number 6 is unveiled in right field between Joe Cronin's #4 and Carl Yastrzemski's #8.

Congratulations Johnny, this honor is well deserved for such a great member of the Boston Red Sox.

High School Game Plan Fails Patriots

Today was the perfect time to open the Patriots offense for Matt Cassel and let him start airing the ball out. Instead the Patriots stuck with their past games plans and continued to work on short passes that made the completion percent look nice but nothing else.

If Matt Cassel can't be the quarterback who can pass the ball down field and help the offense score points then don't put him on the field.

We would be better off using the game time in a failed season to develop a younger Kevin O'Connell, because if Cassel can't be a down field passer now, he never will be, he is completely useless to the New England Patriots.

Losing today was tough to take, it was the Miami Dolphins after all. Several people have used the words "karma is a bitch" or "karma sucks" and while that maybe true, right now I'm not upset about losing to Miami, I am upset with how we managed to lose.

Trailing 21-6 with about a minute left in the first half and knowing Miami gets the ball first in the second half, the Patriots offense went out on the field and continued to good off with the damn short passes.

I don't care if coverage was tight, at some point you need to say the hell with it, send Randy Moss deep, air it out and let Moss do what he does best, make amazing plays.

Early in the fourth quarter the Patriots had a series that went, incomplete short left, Cassel 2 yard rush, Cassel 2 yard rush, punt. It was clear even before then that this team gave up.

The Patriots have a bye next week and then have back-to-back games out west, first in San Francisco and then in San Diego. It may benefit the team to remain out west between games, if not to save them from the excessive jet lag, than to save the players from seeing the trashing they are sure to take in the media over the next couple weeks.

If the Patriots aren't competitive in three weeks against the Chargers it will be clear this team is toast for 2008.

At least we have the ability to look forward to the day Tom Brady returns to the huddle for the Patriots.

Sox Announce 2009 Schedule

Well numerous Red Sox bloggers wont spend weeks this year patching together the Red Sox schedule as the team today announced it's 2009 schedule.

Here is a link to the schedule, I will be back in a bit with more on it.

Red Sox Avoid Gorilla Escape Repeat

The Boston Red Sox and Theo Epstein have agreed on a new contract. Terms of the deal were not announced.

‘‘We are all on the same page with regard to our vision for the organization," Henry wrote in an e-mail this afternoon. "The negotiations were pleasant and were all about rewarding Theo for the great, great job he has done in bringing two world championships to the Red Sox. We look forward to the difficult task of trying to win a third."

Henry clarified in a later e-mail that while the main negotiations were complete and "lawyers are handling the details," the sides haven't settled all matters.

Red Sox Likely To Land Junichi Tazawa

From Kyodo News

Right-hander Junichi Tazawa, who helped Nippon Oil to its first title in 13 years at the national corporate baseball tournament that ended Tuesday, will try to sign with a major league club without playing in Japan, baseball sources said Wednesday.

The highly unusual news came as a shock as the 22-year-old Tazawa was expected to draw the spotlight as the key figure in the first round of this year's autumn amateur draft in Japanese baseball.

Major league clubs, including the Boston Red Sox, appear to be interested in Tazawa.
The right-hander throws a fastball over 150 kilometers per hour and also has a forkball and slider in his arsenal. Tazawa pitched in all five games of the national tournament, posting four wins to help lead Nippon Oil to its ninth overall crown and was named the tournament MVP.

There's some good links here on Tazawa.

Braves and Tigers among those interested but consensus seems to say Boston will land him.

A writer for Yahoo Sports Japan also predicts the Red Sox will land him.

Massarotti Is An Idiot

I'm sure by now most of Red Sox nation has gotten a whiff of the article Tony Massarotti wrote today writing off any importance of winning the American League East and suggesting the Red Sox would be better off resting players and taking the Wild Card then going full force at Tampa Bay for the division crown.

First off, too much rest will only kill us come the playoffs, just ask Detroit.

Second, does anyone feel comfortable having to travel to Anaheim in the first round? I don't either.

As I write this the Red Sox are within three outs of a one half game deficit in the American League East and likely will be division leaders when the series ends Wednesday, exactly why should or would Boston write off the American League East at this point?

The prize of winning the East is hosting Chicago or Minnesota in a best of five series, that gives a much safer route to the American League Championship Series than a match up with the Angels on the road.

Also as I write this Jonathan Papelbon just now finished off the Rays for a 3-0 Sox victory moving Boston to just one win behind the Angels for the best record in the American League, should Boston also write off securing home field advantage when it is very achievable?

The Red Sox have the talent offensively to remain a powerful force while resting players reguarly, afterall they have been doing that most of the season.

Chris Carter can play DH while resting David Ortiz, Carter has power and went 3-3 earlier this season during a one game callup.

With J.D. Drew ready to return he can get some rest once he's back on track with Mark Kotsay in the fold along with Coco Crisp and Jacoby Ellsbury around.

When it comes to pitching you can't exactly shut a guy down for three weeks and expect him to be ready to fire up for the playoffs, these guys still need to pitch.

As of today the rotation is actually setup perfectly.

On the 13th Boston has a doubleheader, Paul Byrd and Bartolo Colon are scheduled to start. If theirs no injuries between now and the seasons end and Boston uses all six starters after this weekends doubleheader then Beckett would be slated to open a October 1st ALDS match up on seven days rest. Depending on when game two was played either Lester (Oct. 2) or Matsuzaka (Oct. 3) would pitch on regular rest, the other would pitch game three on at least regular rest.

There are enough arms available or soon to be available that Boston can get these guys out after five innings down the stretch to limit the innings they pitch.

There really is no reason to call off the dogs and Massarotti would know this if he even took a few minutes to research what he writes.

REPORT: Brady Tears ACL; Done For Season

If reports are accurate, the Patriots quest for redemption just got a lot more difficult. Multiple sources are reporting that Tom Brady suffered serious damage to his left knee when hit in the first quarter on a dirty hit by Kansas City Chief Bernard Pollard.

Matt Cassel played well in relief of Brady but the Patriots could still look around and see what kind of deal they might be able to make for a veteran QB.

Among names that could be disussed over the coming days will be Kerry Collins, Brad Johnson, David Carr, A.J. Feeley, Rex Grossman, Kurt Warner and Trent Green.

Warner is the only starter in that group, but if the compensation was good enough Arizona has Matt Leinert on the bench and cerainly would entertain moving Warner.

An Early Look At The Offseason

There will be at least a few issues the Boston Red Sox need to address this off season and catching will be very close to the top.

Jason Varitek is having a very poor offensive season in 2008 which comes at a bad time for him, but a good time for Boston being that he's a free agent after the season.

There will be a price at which Boston will keep Varitek, wether Varitek will agree to return at that price is unknown.

In either case Boston will be having serious discussion for a top catching prospect this winter and Jarrod Saltalamacchia will likely be at the top of the list.

Boston can expect to pay a hefty price for Saltalamacchia if they do land him, probably costing them Justin Masterson as the top player in a package. Boston will probably check in on Salty get a general idea of what will be needed top obtain him and then compare that to others potentially available.

Who will be in Boston in 2009?
For pitchers we're looking at Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Clay Buchholz, Justin Masterson, Jonathan Papelbon, Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima.

Boston also holds options on Tim Wakefield ($4M) and Paul Byrd ($7.5M). Some may look above and think Okajima isn't likely to return, but his club option will become guaranteed with two more appearances at $1.75M.

The outfield is pretty much set unless Boston deals Coco Crisp this winter. Jason Bay, JD Drew and Jacoby Ellsbury round out the group.

On the infield decisions need to be made. Boston at this point can't justify starting Julio Lugo over Jed Lowrie that likely means Alex Cora will be done in Boston as Lugo and his un-tradeable contract will become a super utility player.

Mike Lowell, Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia are all set to return.

We discussed catching above. I don't see any scenario where Varitek isn't back in 2009, his game calling is too valuable for Boston to let it walk. That said, if they can land a top catching prospect who has time at 1B too, Boston could consider carrying three catchers in 2009 giving Varitek more time off and still having Kevin Cash to catch Wakefield.

Under this scenario Varitek would likely catch for Lester and Buchholz while the new entry in town would catch for Matsuzaka and Beckett.

The reason for needing a catcher who can play first is that by carrying three catchers your taking about the roster spot that would go to a backup first baseman.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Lowell To DL

Mike Lowell has been placed on the DL and the Sox recalled David Pauley to take his roster spot.

Pauley's stay could be a short one as he likely only was called up because of the work put in last night by the bullpen.

If his stay is indeed short Boston would likely callup a corner infielder tomorrow or Friday.

The choices will be limited if thats what they want to do. Chris Carter is probably the best hitter among the possibilities, but he hasn't played 1B this season as he split his time between DH and LF.

Ortiz, Pedroia, Youkilis Lead Sox To Victory

An offensive explosion at Fenway Park tonight was led by David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis.

The three combined to go 10-15 with 4 homeruns, 13 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Ortiz hit two three-run homers in the first inning leading Boston to a 10 run frame.

However the big lead wouldn't last as Texas hammered back disposing of Charlie Zink before the fifth inning was over and lead 16-14 going to the bottom of the seventh.

Pedroia would score on an error in the seventh to make it 16-15.

Then in the 8th inning Jacoby Ellsbury pinch hit for Kevin Cash and walked and eventually scored on Pedroia's double, his fifth hit of the game.

Texas then walked Ortiz and Youkilis followed with a 3-run shot, his second homer of the night to send Boston to a 19-16 lead.

Jonathan Papelbon came on for the ninth and while giving up an unearned run held on for the save and a 19-17 victory.

Zink Gets The Call

For once the most deserving player gets the call.

Tuesday evening at Fenway Park, Charlie Zink will make his major league debut after spending several seasons in the minors.

Zink's path the Boston included a switch to make him a knuckleball pitcher after the Red Sox told him that was probably his best chance to someday get to the majors.

Most people since Wakefield's DL stint was announced agreed that Zink most deserved the start on Tuesday, yet many also agreed it was unlikely because Zink had just pitched Friday for Pawtucket and would end up going on just three days rest.

Sunday, August 10, 2008

Wakefield To Disabled List

Tim Wakefield will be placed on the disabled list and Boston is now in need of a starter for Tuesday's game at Fenway.

A quick rundown of Pawtucket's roster and last games pitched shows that Boston has three options for Tuesday.

Justin Masterson could make the start out of the bullpen, Michael Bowden could be called up for his major league debut or Devern Hansack could be recalled for the start.

Bowden last pitched on August 5 and would start the game on six days rest if the call was made to him. Hansack would make the start on regular rest as he last pitched on Thursday.

Charlie Zink pitched Friday and would have to start on three days rest. David Pauley pitched Saturday and Bartolo Colon on a rehab assignment pitches today.

The choice could be known early in Pawtucket's game. In his last start after struggling, Bowden was brought in with two outs in the first, if Colon struggles again today early and the call is made to someone other than Bowden it could be a sign he is being held back for Tuesday.

The Red Sox of late have chosen to make the move to the young pitchers when a need occured and with the timeframe working in favor of that again and with the game being at Fenway expect Bowden to be making his major league debut Tuesday against Texas.

Blog Downtime

On Sunday I will be implimenting a new layout for the blog so there will be times when the blog while accessible will be a little messy.

UPDATE Sunday 11:39 PM

The transformation didn't go as smoothly as I planned. I hope to finish it by late Monday.

There will be some more content added to the sidebar and the menu across the top will be functional then.

UPDATE Friday 10:46 PM
After much aggravation, the new format just wasn't working properly not to mention a very delayed reaction for the sidebar to load. As a result I am back to the old format but all the settings are gone.

Since I don't plan to have the sidebar as cluttered this time I should get all the content back on there by tomorrow night.

PS... Ugh on tonight's game.

Red Sox May Call Up Daniel Bard

The Boston Red Sox may call up Daniel Bard to take the roster spot of recently traded Craig Hansen. The sox would want to call up someone who is currently being used as a reliever or who has experience in the roll, that was evident when they chose to send Justin Masterson down last month to prepare for a move to the bullpen as opposed to just moving him there at the major league level.

The Sox currently have 38 players on the 40 man roster so no move would be needed to add Bard to the roster.

The Sox have limited choices right now to fill the spot in the bullpen.

Hunter Jones at AAA could be another option, but it's not known if the Sox would want three lefties in the pen.

Chris Smith also could be a choice to be called up.

Welcome To Boston Jason Bay

Curt Schilling was nice enough today to offer his #38 to Jason Bay...for a price, which would go to Schilling's Curt's Pitch charity.

Boston.com tonight introduces us to Jason Bay.

• Full name: Jason Raymond Bay. He'll turn 30 on Sept. 20. He's 6-foot-2, 205 pounds and was born in Trail, B.C., Canada.

• He and his wife, Kristen, have one daughter, Addison, who will turn 2 in November.

• His sister, Lauren, is a professional softball player who pitched for Canada in the 2004 Summer Olympics.

• He is friends with fellow Trail native and Edmonton Oilers center Shawn Horcoff and hails from the same town as St. Louis Blues defenseman Barrett Jackman.

• He played hockey as a youngster, but quit in favor of baseball. Like many Canadian ballplayers, he grew up idolizing Larry Walker, also a B.C. native. He rooted for the Mariners as a kid. He was a member of the 1990 Trail Little League team that represented Canada in the Little League World Series.

• He played two years at Gonzaga, earning first-team All-West Coast Conference honors as a junior and senior. He was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 22nd round, 2000.

• New England connection: He started playing for the Vermont Expos of the New York-Penn League and played two seasons ('99, 2000) for the Chatam A's of the Cape Cod League.

• He spent time in A-ball in 2002, hitting for average and power. He was dealt in March of that year to the Mets, who flipped him to the Padres for reliever Steve Reed at the 2002 trade deadline.

• He made his MLB debut May 23, 2003. His first big-league hit was a ninth-inning homer off of Arizona reliever (and future Red Sox reliever) Matt Mantei.

• An Elmer Dessens pitch fractured his wrist two days later and was sent to the minors for rehab.

• He was a teammate of former Sox infielder and current NESN studio analyst Lou Merloni on the 2003 Padres.

• In August 2003, he was traded with Oliver Perez and Cory Stewart to the Pirates for Brian Giles. He finished the year with a .287 average, 4 homers and 13 RBI in 87 at-bats. He reached base safely in his final 14 games, though he was bothered by a torn right labrum that required offseason surgery.

How Will Boston Finish 2008?

With the trade today sending Manny Ramirez to Los Angeles and Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss to Pittsburgh in return for Jason Bay we ask, How will Boston finish 2008?

BREAKING: RAMIREZ TRADED

Details forthcoming

UPDATE 4:28 PM
Waiting for details but reports are that Manny has been traded to the Dodgers, this came moments after reports of a trade between Pittsburgh and the Dodgers for Jason Bay.

We maybe looking at a deal where the Dodgers sent Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier to the Pirates for Bay and then turned Bay to Boston for Ramirez, that's just speculation on my part but we should know details soon.

UPDATE 4:32 PM
As speculated above Boston gets Jason Bay and the Dodgers get Ramirez while Pittsburgh gets four prospects, this again signals that the Marlins were to blame for the earlier three-way deal collapsing.

The deal was reportedly made moments before the deadline.

UPDATE 4:40 PM
Boston reportedly sends Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen to Pittsbugh as part of the deal, Pittsburgh also gets Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris from the Dodgers.

UPDATE 5:00 PM
With what Boston gave up and the fact they are still paying the entire remaining portion of Manny's contract, I wonder if they also get John Grabow in the deal, guess we wait until the official announcement.

Deal Dead

The three-way trade between Boston, Florida and Pittsburgh is dead and the Marlins are blaming the Pirates and the Pirates are blaming the Marlins, meantime the Sox are unhappy with both teams.

UPDATE 1:40 PM
Just over an hour ago a source with the Pirates indicated they were happy with their take and ceased negotiations with other teams on a Bay deal.

This along with the report that Florida wanted more cash and multiple prospects from Boston along with Ramirez would indicate Florida is the most to blame if not entirely to blame for the deal collapsing.

UPDATE 1:56 PM
The Marlins may have also been on target to get the catching they need in this trade as Ronny Paulino's name was being mentioned early this afternoon.

UPDATE 2:21 PM
Is this deal a cat? It appears it may have nine lives.

From the Boston Globes Gordon Edes; Less than 2 hours before the trading deadline, the Red Sox were still trying to make this 3-way deal with the Pirates and Marlins work, but as one source said, "They're not going to be stupid about it."

Edes adds that within the past 10 minutes an industry source has told him negotiations are likely to go down to the last minutes of the deadline.

The sticking point maybe the Marlins demanding multiple prospects from Boston along with Manny and the cash.

Nick Cafardo adds Reports are beginning to surface that the three-way deal for Manny Ramirez is dead or close to dead, but I’m not buying it. The same snags exist now that existed this morning, and there’s still time to work them out before the 4 p.m. deadline.

UPDATE 3:18 PM
Jason Bay has been traded to Tampa Bay meaning the three-team deal between Boston, Florida and Pittsburgh is officially dead.

Boston has been talking to the Dodgers and those talks may heat up very quickly now if they haven't already.

UPDATE 3:45 PM
MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo says the Tampa Bay/Pittsburgh deal is NOT DONE.

UPDATE 3:55 PM
The waiting game is about to begin. While the trade deadline passes deals that are made that may not be announced immediately, should there be no announcement at 4:00 PM doesn't mean no deal was made by Boston.

Sox, Yanks Chasing Scott Eyre?

Jayson Stark is reporting Boston and New York are both vying for the Cubs Scott Eyre.

Is The Trade Close To Complete?

The Pittsburgh Pirates have reportedly told the Tampa Bay Rays that Jason Bay is likely going somewhere else. This is a good sign that a deal maybe close between the Marlins, Pirates and Red Sox.

It has been reported that the major pieces of the trade are in place and the remaining obstacle is the prospects involved that Pittsburgh would receive.

It is also reported that Manny Ramirez officially consented to being traded to Florida this morning which would be the final piece to a deal being done. With Manny agreeing and Pittsburgh telling Tampa Bay that Bay is likely going elsewhere we may be at the point where the trade is on the commissioners desk for approval, Bud Selig must approve the trade because of the amount of cash being sent to Florida.

UPDATE 12:53 PM
And just like that the deal maybe dead. Peter Gammons is reporting Florida now wants more cash beyond the $7 million still owed this year and wants Boston to give them two prospects.

Red Sox And Marlins Talking Manny

The Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins are in serious discussions tonight on a deal that would send Manny Ramirez and a boatload of cash to the Marlins in exchange for three players.

Boston would likely get either Josh Willingham or Jeremy Hermida along with two other players, in exchange Boston likely would pay the remaining balance of Manny's 2008 contract.

Under that scenario this would appear to be a legit discussion on Florida's part as they have shown in the past to go for it all and then come back the following year with a sub par roster.

UPDATE 7:00 PM
Deal imminent? There's now reports that a deal is close, in the return Boston would get 18-year old Michael Stanton.

UPDATE 7:31 PM
New twist, a deal is being discussed that would send Ramirez to Florida, Jason Bay to Boston and Jeremy Hermida to Pittsburgh.

Boston would likely still get at least a prospect since they will be paying the $7 million still owed Ramirez.

UPDATE 8:24 PM
Manny Ramirez has opened his big mouth again.

From Boston.com

Manny Ramirez had another phone conversation with Enrique Rojas, a reporter for ESPNDeportes, and took more shots at the Sox in an apparent effort to force a trade."They haven't asked me for anything," Ramirez was quoted as saying in response to whether the Sox had asked his permission to trade him.

"The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me," Ramirez said. "During my years here I've seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn't want them to try to turn the fans against them.

"The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy. I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don't deserve me. I'm not talking about money. Mental peace has no price and I don't have peace here."

The Sox brass, including ownership, met today to discuss a possible Manny deal. Coming out of that meeting, the belief was that there was only a slim chance of something happening, but they are still talking to clubs, especially the Marlins, so stay tuned.''

UPDATE 9:36 PM
The three-way deal is starting to take shape. Several have checked in and a recap from MLBTradeRumors.com tells us that both Boston and Florida are likely to send prospects to Pittsburgh, Boston gets Jason Bay while Florida gets Manny Ramirez.

John Grabow could end up in either Boston or Florida and the Sox may include Jed Lowrie to Pittsburgh to obtain Jack Wilson in the deal.

Hermida would also go to Pittsburgh. Folks this is starting to turn into a blockbuster.

UPDATE 10:02 PM
Deal is nearly done just finalizing the prospects involved. The Commsioners office has been notified of specifics and need to approve the deal because of the level of cash Boston will send to Florida.

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (BOS), and cash (likely Ramirez’s remaining salary)

Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two FLO, one BOS)

Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

Mets Have Interest In Ramirez

Official from the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox have both confirmed talks have been made between the clubs on Manny Ramirez.

While the Mets have been reluctant to offer top prospects for Adam Dunn, Randy Winn and Raul Ibanez they view Ramirez as a superior hitter and would discuss players in a Ramirez trade that they wouldn't in others.

UPDATE 3:00 PM
The Dodgers are apparently are showing interest with Boston for Manny Ramirez. They don't want to add payroll so they maybe asking Boston to pay a large part of whats left on his 2008 salary which would mean they would have to give up more to acquire him.

Jon Heyman speculates Boston could use this deal to acquire young talent and then turn them around to Atlanta for Mark Teixeira.

UPDATE 3:51 PM
The Dodgers have moved to the lead in the race for Manny Ramirez according to the New York Post, the Red Sox would pay most of the remaining $7 million owed to Ramirez while Boston would acquire someone along the lines of Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier. Boston is then expected to move that player in a deal for Mark Teixeira.

Should Boston make both deals Kevin Youkilis would likely become the Red Sox leftfielder while Teixeira plays first.

UPDATE 6:05 PM
The Red Sox won't be making a deal for Mark Teixeira, but they should see him tomorrow as the Angels have sent Casey Kotchman to the Braves for Tex.

The Dodgers are also denying any interest in Manny Ramirez.

UPDATE 8:04 PM
The Red Sox are still in talks to trade Ramirez with Philadelphia viewed as the leading candidate. The Dodgers and Marlins are also talking with Boston.

Jon Heyman suggests Pat Burrell maybe the player Boston gets in return so one would think theres more to it then a one for one swap as the two players have about the same offensive output.

Burrell is one of the leading targets for Boston this offseason should they decline Manny's option.

Red Sox Looking At Tejada, May Have Offer In For Teixeira

The Boston Red Sox are reportedly in talks with the Houston Astros for Miguel Tejada.

ESPNdeportes.com's Enrique Rojas reports that according to one source talks have just begun while a separate source says discussions have been on going for some time.

Tejada said today in an interview "I feel good in Houston, but I wouldn't be afraid to accept the challenge of playing in Boston."

Meantime the Atlanta Braves are reportedly going over multiple offers for Mark Teixeira and Boston could be one of the teams with an offer in for him. Other teams who are thought to be interested are Arizona, Tampa Bay and the Los Angeles Angels.

UPDATE 2:50AM
The Red Sox are denying any interest in Miguel Tejada.

The Red Sox maybe interested in Astro reliever Geoff Geary though with the Astros apparently looking to add a reliver they maybe unlikely to deal Geary.

Red Sox Will Attempt Trade For Ramirez

Theo Epstein has told Tim McCarver that if Manny Ramirez is willing to waive his no trade clause, the Red Sox will attempt to trade him.

This really doesn't come as a surprise as Red Sox management is very upset with Ramirez over the past couple weeks and his most recent episode has all but guaranteed he won't return next year.

The most likly landing spot for Ramirez in a trade is the New York Mets who have had interest in him in the past, the Mets are also in need of a corner outfielder.

They would have him for two more years if they pick up his options.

Ramirez Has Signed Ticket Out Of Boston

Theo Epstein's job for the next week has just gotten a little harder.

Already on a mission to land a relief pitcher to help turn around the bullpen, Epstein must now focus time on attempts to land a power hitting outfielder.

Manny Ramirez has all but secured his exit from Boston possibly before seasons end. Should Boston be able to land a bat before the July 31 trade deadline Ramirez will likely be placed on waivers in hopes that someone will claim him and rid Boston of the player and the remainder of his 2008 salary. Should no team bite, Boston would likely then just release him and pay the remainder of his salary due.

Ramirez already faces suspension from the team if he refuses to play Saturday.

Names that will be the target of many discussions over the next several days will be Matt Holliday, Jason Bay and possibly even Adam Dunn.

Boston could also go in house and callup Chris Carter.

The could also make a run for Mark Teixeira and move Kevin Youkilis to left.

John Smoltz To Retire?

There's rumors floating around that Atlanta Braves pitcher and future Hall of Famer John Smoltz will announce his retirement at an 11:30am press conference at Turner Field.

Smoltz returned from the disabled list Monday and blew a save, he apparently re injured his arm and now faces season ending surgery.

Smoltz appears content to ride off into retirement instead of working the long road back from surgery again.

We'll have more after the press conference.

Monday, June 02, 2008

Ortiz Could Have Season Ending Surgery

The Boston Herald is reporting that season ending surgery could be a real possibility for David Ortiz if it doesn't heal while in a cast for the next month.

Should Ortiz have to have surgery, Boston will be left with a huge hole in their lineup. They will likely need to find someone on the trade market which could require giving up a combination of Jed Lowrie, Jon Lester or Justin Masterson, all of whom have raised their value in the opening months of the 2008 season.

Who could Boston look at as replacements?

Barry Bonds would immediately enter discussions and while he would come without losing prospects, he would be unlikely to land in Boston.

Mark Teixeira will be a name mentioned often and Boston has the talent to pry him away from Atlanta, but Boston would need to get him signed to an extension as part of a deal or they wont give up the names needed to land him.

Jim Thome will also be a free agent at seasons end and could probably be had for less the Teixeira and Chicago may look to move him especially if they begin to falter in the Central.

They could try options within the system possibly with Chris Carter who has a decent bat, but is labeled a DH type who was blocked by Ortiz at the major league level. He started off slowly power wise but has come on of late.

Boston could also recall Brandon Moss and use a combination of Moss, Coco Crisp, Jacoby Ellsbury and JD Drew in the outfield while putting Manny Ramirez at designated hitter while Manny is out.

Saturday, May 31, 2008

500

Manny Ramirez became the 24th player in major league history to record 500 career homeruns. The shot came on the first pitch from Baltimore reliver Chad Bradford.

Geremi Gonzalez 1975-2008

The Red Sox family has lost another member on this holiday weekend.

Geremi Gonzalez who spent parts of the 2005 season with the Red Sox making three starts and 28 total appearances died Sunday in his native Venezuela after being struck by lightning on a beach.

Gonzalez played for five teams during his career compiling a 30-35 record. He last played in 2007 in Japan.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Gonzalez family.

Cancer Survivor Lester Tosses No Hitter Against Royals

Red Sox lefty Jon Lester tossed a no hitter against the Kansas City Royals.

Lester struck out nine batters including the final out of the game, he walked just two batters.

The no hitter was the 18th in Sox history and first since last September when rookie Clay Buchholz tossed one against the Baltimore Orioles.

Jacoby Ellsbury made a highlight diving catch in the fourth to preserve the gem.

It was only the second time the Royals have been no hit, it came just over 35 years after Nolan Ryan got them on May 15, 1973.

It was the fourth no hitter called by catcher Jason Varitek.

After a run of over 30 years without a no hitter for the Sox this is the fourth since 2001. Hideo Nomo had one in 2001, Derek Lowe in 2002 and Buchholz last season.

Boston won 7-0 and extended their winning streak to four games.

It was the 411th consecutive sellout at Fenway, 44 games short of the major league record held by the Cleveland Indians.

Celtics' success traced, in part, to the fortunes of a blind son

Just wanted to point you all to this ESPN.com story.

BOSTON -- Campbell Grousbeck sits at his granite kitchen counter, attacking a steaming dish of pasta and broccoli. He sips a pink vitaminwater, power-c (dragonfruit), and, being an acutely social 15-year-old, he asks a guest his favorite flavor.

"Uh," the guest says, trying to buy time, "the red kind."

This is not a good answer, for a number of reasons, but Campbell doesn't flinch.

"What are the ingredients?" he asks.

"Blueberry and, hmmm …"

"Pomegranate," Campbell says, triumphantly. "That's triple-X, triple antioxidants."

Yes, in fact, that's it -- XXX. Now, this is a solid effort for anyone, but well, here's the thing: Campbell Grousbeck is blind. How does he know that?

"Campbell," his father says, smiling, "is a pretty smart guy."

Campbell Grousbeck's father, Wyc, calls his son "a pretty smart guy." Campbell, who attends the Perkins School for the Blind, is the reason his family is back in Boston.

The apple apparently doesn't fall far from the tree. Campbell's father, Wycliffe "Wyc" Grousbeck, is the chief executive officer of the Boston Celtics. In 2002, he led a group of local investors who purchased the NBA franchise.

It now has been 22 seasons since the league's most decorated franchise won a title. That the Celtics still are a threat to hoist a 17th championship banner this season is largely a result of the aggressive, spare-no-expense leadership of Wyc and his partners. And that Wyc found himself in position to buy the team, oddly enough, can be traced directly back to Campbell's blindness. So, as you watch Kevin Garnett elevate under the basket and swat away the shots, and see Paul Pierce and Ray Allen singe the twine, know this:

It's all happening because of a sweet, slight boy who can't see any of it.

"We would be out in California, probably, and my golf game would be a little bit better, but I wouldn't be getting ready for a playoff game tonight," Wyc said several weeks ago. "If not for Campbell, we wouldn't be here."

Said Wyc's wife, Corinne: "We would never be out here if it were not for Campbell. I mean, that's a real example of following the child. We followed him clear across the country."

New York Herald?

The Boston Herald today apologized to the Patriots ownership, players, employees and fans for the crap they printed the day before the Super Bowl.

"On Feb. 2, 2008, the Boston Herald reported that a member of the New England Patriots video staff taped the St. Louis Rams’ walkthrough on the day before Super Bowl XXXVI. While the Boston Herald based its Feb. 2, 2008, report on sources that it believed to be credible, we now know that this report was false, and that no tape of the walkthrough ever existed.

Prior to the publication of its Feb. 2, 2008, article, the Boston Herald neither possessed nor viewed a tape of the Rams’ walkthrough before Super Bowl XXXVI, nor did we speak to anyone who had. We should not have published the allegation in the absence of firmer verification.

The Boston Herald regrets the damage done to the team by publication of the allegation, and sincerely apologizes to its readers and to the New England Patriots owners, players, employees and fans for our error."

The article appears in Wednesdays print edition as well as on the Herald site. The comments were already piling up early this morning. Here is a sampling of what some fans had to say.

I am never reading the Herald for the rest of my life, and I hope the writer of that article, who everyone knows by now, is severely punished for this. To publish a false report, of this magnitude, the day before the Superbowl, is unforgivable.

responsible journalism? Give it a try sometimes!

You need to man up Tomase must be at least suspend if not terminated as does the editor who approved and ran the story. How did you go from having "a source" to having "sources" and don't forget your response to the Globe when they had someone who made up a story. Lets see if you practice what you preach.
Integrity
If John Tomase is fired, I'll think about reading this publication again. Anything short of that is just empty words. If the Herald was used as some kind of manipulated platform as the timing of the article suggests, then that also needs to come to light. Until then this is just a half-assed apology for a maliciously unsubstantiated allegation the Herald made at a critical time for the New England Patriots.

You guys are truely ridiculous...I took 1 Jouralism class in high school, and hardly paid attention and even I know that you're suppose to check your sources out. Over and over again. Okay, so you guys didn't see the tape, but you didn't even talk to someone who actually saw "the tape"???? Haha...thats horrible. How do u report something based on a rumor? Nothing more then a Tabloid.
bushy
You "own up"? LMAO. How big of you. There is only one way you people can "own up" and that's that every editor who allowed the story to run is fired immediately. That Tomase should be fired as well goes without saying. If heads don't start rolling at the Herald, and I mean immediately, everyone there better start looking job starting 7am this morning.

A Lancaster Laugher

Too bad it was Inland Empire doing the laughing.

The Lancaster JetHawks, the A Advanced affiliate of the Boston Red Sox gave up ten runs in the ninth inning on their way to losing to Inland Empire 25-1.

The 66ers scored five runs in the first, four in the second, two in the third, fifth and eight and then 10 runs in the ninth.

This was the highest scoring game so far this season in Lancaster which usually sees some shootouts, the odd line of the day though was that Lancaster scored just once on three hits.

The winds that assist the scoring has already caused two postponements this season.

The two teams wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon.
